Biography
Ava is currently in final months of a graduate year at RMIT studying a Bachelor of Fashion Design. During her studies, Ava has worked in a range of areas of design and design methods, with a focus on refining skills and applying these in practical and creative ways. She has developed an in-depth understanding of commercial, niche, luxury and emerging markets. While studying diverse and contemporary global practices, Ava has developed a personal passion for merging traditional tailoring techniques within a modern context to create garments that have a contemporary twist on old methods. In her final year, Ava has specialised in utilising couture techniques with an aim to bring a slower fashion business model into today’s industry. Throughout her studies she has explored various sustainable industry techniques and approaches to combat fast fashion, including Zero-Waste pattern making, Up-cycling old materials into new garments, and has also utilised natural dye techniques and fabric finishes in preparation for her final collection.
Ava has focused her studies on creating ethical design propositions and using cross-disciplinary strategies that drive global and competitive practice. She has a comprehensive knowledge in fashion design and sustainable practices as used throughout her studies. During her time at university, she has interned at the sustainable Melbourne based fashion label Viktoria and Woods, worked as a stylist in both womenswear and menswear, was accepted to study abroad at UNCG and has worked in collaboration with industry partners as a lead designer to create staff uniforms for an overseas expo. At her current job in menswear she offers fit and styling advice, as well as preparing garments for alteration to provide clients with a perfect custom fit. Outside of work and uni, she is further building her industry experience by working individually with clients to provide them with a bespoke ’tailoring’ service while creating traditional and contemporary garments that are designed with their desires and needs in mind.
